Terrante, San Miniato, Tuscany

Some producers make wine. Others become wine, you taste their hands, their convictions, their years of experience and learning. Terrante is the second kind.

Based in San Miniato, in the gentle hills between Florence and the coast, Terrante is a recent but not naive project. Francesco de Filippis spent years producing wines before deciding his name deserved to be on the label. What emerged is a small, honest range built on Sangiovese, the grape that defines Tuscany at its most authentic, with Trebbiano and Malvasia for the whites, and the occasional international variety used with restraint, not ambition.

The white opens with fruit and flowers, then surprises you: a light skin contact gives it a quiet body and a thread of texture that makes it interesting rather than simply pretty. The rosso has the kind of balance that only comes from experience, fruit and spice, nothing heavy, nothing forced. Wines that belong on a table, not on a shelf.

Terrante also produces extra-virgin olive oil from the same land. When a producer works like that, grapes and olives, same soil, same hands, you know the priorities are right.
